Blood . . .

Stone turned, twisted in his sleep. His body shivered and convulsed. Images flew at him. Blood . . . Pain, so much pain . . . the screaming. Agony. Do something. Can’t do anything . . . something, anything . . .

His back arched and he cried out, gasping. The baby . . . somebody save the baby. The lash . . . the beating. Blood on his clothes, on his back, on his hands.

A door tone exploded in Stone’s head and he sat up, gasping, his body covered with sweat.

He reoriented himself. Stone’s knees were drawn up to his chin, and he looked around to see that he had twisted up the sheets on his bed again. His boots stood over in a corner.

The door toned again. He let out a long, trembling sigh. “Yes.” He managed to sound perfectly calm as he said it.

“Commander Stone,” came Picard’s crisp, no-nonsense voice, “We have to talk. Now.”

Stone nodded slowly. “Can I have a moment, Captain. Please?”

On the other side of the door, Picard realized that this was the first time Stone had ever asked him for anything. “Take your time,” said Picard. “I’ll wait.”
